Laura Hughes, wife of the late Jason Hughes, a beloved math teacher and golf coach at North Hall High School, has made an unexpected plea to drop charges against five students involved in a prank that resulted in her husband's death. The incident occurred late last Thursday when students approached the Hughes' Gainesville home to carry out a long-standing prank tradition.
Authorities stated that as the students were leaving in two vehicles, Mr. Hughes, who was reportedly anticipating the prank, tripped and fell into the roadway. He was then struck by a car driven by 18-year-old Jayden Ryan Wallace, who has been charged with first-degree vehicular homicide and reckless driving.
Wallace and the other four students, identified as Elijah Tate Owens, Aiden Hucks, Ana Katherine Luque, and Ariana Cruz, all 18, stopped to render aid and remained for first responders. They also face charges of criminal trespass and littering. Mrs. Hughes expressed her desire to prevent a separate tragedy by not ruining the students' lives, emphasizing that this action would contradict her husband's lifelong dedication to his students.
The school community mourns Hughes as a passionate educator and mentor. A GoFundMe has been established to support his wife and two young sons during this difficult time.
