A school teacher and social worker from Kolkata, Amir Chand Shekh, experienced a harrowing ordeal after being arrested on charges of selling his late mother's body parts. He spent three days in jail before being granted bail by the Krishnanagar court. The arrest stemmed from a complaint alleging the sale of his mother, Rabeya Sekh's, body parts, who had passed away on February 8.
However, Shekh maintained his innocence, asserting that he was a victim of a conspiracy. Crucially, documents presented to the court confirmed that his mother's cornea had been donated to a government hospital as per her wishes. Shekh, who was working as a booth-level officer for electoral roll updates, was released on bail along with four family members on a bond of ₹2,000 each.
Following his release, Shekh expressed pride in fulfilling his mother's final wish. He recounted how his mother, despite being illiterate, decided to donate her eyes after learning about the possibility during her cataract surgery, understanding that her corneas could restore sight to multiple individuals. He contrasted this selfless act with the lack of understanding among some educated individuals regarding organ donation.
