Jamie Varley, a teacher, received a life sentence for the murder of 13-month-old Preston Davey, who suffered "unremitting abuse" under his care. Varley recorded a video of the distressed infant nearly two hours before taking him to the hospital. Preston was pronounced dead at 7:18 PM on July 27, 2023. A post-mortem revealed the cause of death was acute upper airway obstruction and approximately 40 external and internal injuries, including signs of sexual abuse.
Preston had been placed in foster care due to his biological mother's imprisonment before being approved for adoption with Varley and his partner, McGowan-Fazakerley. Despite clear needs for safety and stability, concerning incidents occurred. In May 2023, Preston was hospitalized with unexplained bruising. In June, he was treated for a rash and again had bruising noted, with medical staff informed of a toy box incident that allegedly caused the injuries. Later, in July 2023, an X-ray revealed a fractured elbow.
Varley was convicted of murder and numerous other offenses. His partner, McGowan-Fazakerley, was convicted of allowing the child's death, child cruelty, and sexual assault, receiving a 25-year sentence. The children's commissioner raised concerns about professional oversight, questioning if Varley's profession masked his abusive behavior. Preston's biological mother expressed her ongoing pain and a desire for answers.
