Two teenagers, aged 14 and 16, face murder charges following the death of university student Marco Tapia. The 23-year-old was fatally shot in his Glen Alpine home on September 1 in what police have confirmed was a mistaken identity incident.
Detectives allege the two youths assisted the gunman by providing a weapon and staging getaway vehicles. They were arrested on September 16 after police raids in Fairfield, subsequently charged with murder and other offenses.
Tapia was pursuing a biomedical engineering degree at the University of Technology Sydney and was involved in volunteer work. His parents described the attack as a "nightmare" that happened "so fast."
This shooting occurred amidst a surge in gangland violence in Sydney, with another mistaken identity shooting resulting in a death in Merrylands West the day after Tapia's murder.
