A man who murdered his ex-partner in her Sydney apartment has been sentenced to a maximum of 24 years in prison. Danny Zayat assaulted Tatiana Dokhotaru, causing fatal head injuries, in May 2023. Evidence presented at his trial revealed a history of domestic violence, including assaults and threats against Ms. Dokhotaru.
Justice Desmond Fagan described Zayat's actions as cowardly and cruel, noting his persistent stalking and harassment of Ms. Dokhotaru. The judge highlighted the danger posed by fixated individuals who cannot accept rejection. Zayat will be eligible for parole in March 2043, after serving an 18-year non-parole period.
Ms. Dokhotaru had called emergency services shortly before her death, reporting Zayat's attempt to steal cash she had saved from her businesses. Despite her plea for help, Zayat terminated the call and fled with the money, leaving their young son alone with her body for 12 hours.
