Chandra Irawan, 41, has been charged with murder after his friend Tammasan Phuangphinyo was fatally stabbed at their Concord home on Sunday. Police responded to a welfare concern and found Mr. Phuangphinyo, 37, with a fatal chest wound. Despite attempts at resuscitation, he was pronounced deceased at the scene. Mr. Irawan was arrested and subsequently charged with murder.
Appearing via audio-visual link at Burwood Local Court on Monday, Mr. Irawan, who did not apply for bail, was remanded in custody. Magistrate Robyn Denes ordered a mental health assessment for the accused. Neighbors reported being shocked, having never heard any disturbances from the usually quiet and friendly couple who had lived there for some time.
Mr. Irawan's partner is assisting police with the investigation. Authorities stated the attack did not appear premeditated, and both men had minimal prior records, mostly for minor traffic offenses. Mr. Irawan is scheduled to appear in court again on May 6.
