Summary
- A 46-year-old swimming coach was arrested for alleged assault.
- School staff reportedly tried to conceal the incident.
- The victim's parents arranged counseling for trauma.
A 46-year-old swimming coach, Sarath Chandran, has been arrested and remanded for 14 days in connection with an alleged sexual assault attempt on a 14-year-old student. The incident reportedly took place in January at a private school in Varkala, where Chandran was employed as a swimming coach. He was apprehended on Tuesday from a training academy in Thrissur.
According to the complaint, the student screamed for help following the alleged assault. Other teachers and the school management are accused of attempting to resolve the matter internally without notifying authorities. The student, who was traumatized, received counseling arranged by her parents.
Hospital staff alerted Childline, which then led to a complaint being filed with the Ayiroor Police. Authorities suspect the school management deliberately withheld information about the alleged abuse, and action may be taken against the responsible teachers. Chandran, a former Navy officer and national gold medalist, began coaching after his service.
