28 Jul
Summary
- Suzy Lamplugh vanished 40 years ago meeting a client named Mr. Kipper.
- Prime suspect John Cannan died in prison without being charged.
- The case inspired the creation of the Missing People charity.

Forty years ago this Tuesday, 25-year-old estate agent Suzy Lamplugh disappeared after leaving her Fulham office to meet a client identified as "Mr. Kipper." Her car was later found abandoned, and she has not been seen since. The investigation, which lasted 12 years for former detective chief inspector Mike Barley, has yielded no definitive answers, with Suzy legally declared dead in 1993.
John Cannan is considered the prime suspect in Lamplugh's abduction and murder. Although he died in prison in 2024, he was never formally charged in connection with her disappearance. Cannan was known for his involvement in other crimes, including the murder of Shirley Banks, and evidence suggested a possible link to Suzy's case through a repainted Mini with a license plate that might have referenced Suzy's initials.
Despite extensive searches, including one in Worcestershire based on a girlfriend's claim, no conclusive evidence has been found. The case is set to be mothballed by the police in 12 months. However, Suzy's disappearance inspired her family friends to launch the charity Missing People, which has since become a crucial support system for families of missing individuals. The Suzy Lamplugh Trust also continues her parents' work, championing women's safety.
