Surgeon Restricted From Seeing Female Patients Alone

Summary
- A surgeon must have a chaperone for female patient consultations.
- The GMC imposed interim conditions on the surgeon's practice.
- Hospitals are investigating the surgeon's conduct.

Dr. Jeremy Stuart Clark, a general surgeon based in Sussex, is now subject to strict interim conditions regarding his patient consultations. As of April 22, 2026, the General Medical Council (GMC) has ruled that Dr. Clark must not consult with female patients without a chaperone present, unless the situation is life-threatening.
This ruling follows an ongoing investigation by the GMC into Dr. Clark's conduct. He is required to maintain a detailed log of all consultations with female patients, including those in emergencies where a chaperone was absent, with chaperones required to sign off on consultations.
Both University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust and Nuffield Health Brighton Hospital are conducting their own inquiries. A spokesperson for UHSx stated that patient safety is paramount, while Nuffield Health confirmed they have suspended Dr. Clark's practicing privileges during their investigation.
