SC Halts Jamshedpur Building Demolitions
2 Feb
Summary
- Supreme Court stayed demolition of 24 illegal Jamshedpur buildings.
- Basements approved for parking were illegally converted to commercial spaces.
- Next hearing tentatively scheduled for March 9, 2026.
In an interim order issued on Monday, the Supreme Court has halted the demolition of 24 illegal buildings in Jamshedpur. The Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) had identified these structures for demolition following a 2018 writ petition. Many of the affected buildings, primarily commercial, are located in Bistupur, Sakchi, and Golmuri. A significant issue involves basements approved for parking that were illegally converted into commercial spaces.
A bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta has issued notices to the state government, East Singhbhum district administration, JNAC, and the building owners. They are required to file their replies within four weeks. Petitioners argued that demolition should be a last resort. The Jharkhand High Court had previously ordered the demolition of these unauthorized buildings by March 9, 2026. The Supreme Court is expected to hear the matter extensively after the replies are submitted, with the next hearing tentatively set for March 9, 2026.
