A 60-year-old retailer in Melbourne's west, Van Viet Truong, has died days after being critically injured during an altercation with alleged shoplifters. Truong had rushed to assist a fellow retail worker who was confronting a group of youths stealing clothes outside the Hong Hung Asian Grocery store in Sunshine on Saturday. He was rushed to hospital but passed away on Wednesday afternoon.

The incident has amplified long-standing concerns among local traders regarding escalating anti-social behaviour and crime in the Brimbank council area, which is reportedly at its highest rate in six years.
Five youths, aged between 12 and 15, were initially charged with assault-related offences, including affray and intentionally causing serious injury. While charges against one 13-year-old boy were withdrawn, the remaining four youths are scheduled to appear in children's court. Detectives are reviewing the situation to determine if charges will be upgraded following Truong's death. Local representatives have met with traders to discuss their concerns and advocate for increased police presence.
