An innocent youth, Chandan Maurya, was mistakenly detained by Sonbhadra's Special Operations Group (SOG) on Sunday night in Sultanpur. The plainclothes SOG team was searching for an accused in a mobile tower battery theft. When Maurya resisted their attempt to detain him, a crowd gathered and protested, leading to a standstill in traffic.
Local police were called to the scene to de-escalate the situation. At the police station, it was confirmed that the SOG had made an error in identifying the suspect through faulty location tracking and photo matching. The youth was found to be entirely innocent.
The SOG team formally apologized to Maurya and his family. Residents questioned the procedure of an outstation team operating without uniform or local police coordination. Authorities stated that no physical force was used on the wrong individual.
