Bairon Hernandez, a 34-year-old man from Honduras, has been arrested and charged with attempted murder following two separate subway track push incidents on Manhattan's Upper East Side. The attacks, which occurred minutes apart on Sunday, left one victim brain dead.
One of the victims, an 83-year-old Air Force veteran, underwent surgery for a brain bleed but was later declared brain dead, according to the Department of Homeland Security. The second victim, 30-year-old John Rodriguez, suffered a shoulder and neck injury and is experiencing panic attacks when thinking about the subway.
Hernandez, who has a record of illegal entry into the U.S. and has been deported four times, was apprehended at a Brooklyn shelter. The NYPD reported nine subway pushes this year, a sharp increase compared to three during the same period last year.
