In January 2020, 18-year-old law student Fernando Báez Sosa was fatally attacked by a group of eight rugby players outside the Le Brique nightclub in Villa Gesell, Argentina. The violent assault, lasting less than a minute, left Báez Sosa unconscious and ultimately led to his death from head trauma. The incident stemmed from an earlier altercation inside the club, after which Báez Sosa and his friends left and were subsequently ambushed.
Investigators quickly detained 11 suspects from the rugby group, eventually charging eight in connection with the death. In February 2023, all eight were found guilty. Five were designated "co-perpetrators" and sentenced to life in prison, while the remaining three were found "secondary participants" and received 15-year sentences. The case, referred to as the "crime of Villa Gesell," has gained wider attention through a Netflix docuseries.
As of November 2025, the convicted individuals are serving their sentences in Argentinian prisons. Fernando's parents have spoken out about the brutality of the attack and the possibility of racist motives, highlighting their profound grief. The family's lawyer has expressed a desire for fuller justice, emphasizing the senselessness of the violence.
