Manjit Chauhan, the main suspect in the murder of BSc student Surya Pratap Singh on the Uday Pratap College campus, was apprehended by police on Friday evening and subsequently jailed. During interrogation, Chauhan revealed that Surya, along with other hostel residents, had subjected him to persistent harassment and physical assaults intended to humiliate him.
Chauhan, who openly declared his aspiration to become a mafia on social media, stated that a recent assault on March 17, where he and friends were attacked with sticks, escalated his intent. Although a complaint was filed and later withdrawn, another targeting on March 20 solidified his resolve to eliminate Surya.
He purchased a country-made pistol and, on March 20, opened fire indiscriminately on the college grounds before attempting to flee. Chauhan sustained a leg fracture while jumping from a roof but managed to escape the campus. He was eventually arrested by police teams later that evening, despite his efforts to evade capture.
