Zack Coughlan, a 23-year-old student at the University of the West of England, stands accused of murdering his housemate, Jamie Collins. The prosecution alleges Coughlan lay in wait for Collins, who was 21, before stabbing him approximately 30 times in the garden of their shared home.
Collins was attacked shortly before 6 PM on April 8th, returning from campus. Coughlan, who was allegedly dressed in black with a mask and gloves, then reportedly cycled away on Collins's bike, discarded it, and disposed of his bloodstained clothing.
He returned home around 9 PM, engaging in online gaming, before calling emergency services eight hours later to report finding Collins's body. The attack was reportedly captured on CCTV footage from the residence.
Coughlan admitted to killing Collins but claims he lost self-control, denying the charge of murder. Previous disagreements over rent were reportedly resolved, with friends describing their student life as normal.
