Pune Traffic Police Truck Vanishes From Custody
31 Dec
Summary
- An impounded cement truck was stolen from police custody in Pune.
- The truck was stolen despite having tyre jammers fitted by officers.
- This is the third such incident involving stolen vehicles from police in Pune since 2023.

In a baffling incident, a ready-mix cement truck impounded by Pune city traffic police has been stolen. The vehicle was taken from police custody near Panchami Hotel Chowk on Pune-Satara Road during the night of Saturday and Sunday. Police had fitted jammers to the truck's tyres to prevent movement, yet it disappeared. This marks the third instance of a vehicle vanishing from police custody in Pune since 2023, raising serious concerns about security protocols.
Previously, in 2023, the Yerawada police seized a luxury bus for traffic violations, only for its owner to take it without informing authorities. Approximately two years before that, a car impounded for drunk driving in Koregaon Park also disappeared the following day, despite having tyre jammers. These repeated occurrences highlight a disturbing trend of vehicles being retrieved from police control.
Traffic police in Pune regularly impound vehicles and file FIRs against drivers, particularly truck drivers, to curb fatal accidents caused by traffic norm violations. In 2025 alone, around 80 FIRs were lodged against truck drivers for various offenses. The current theft of the RMC truck, which was impounded for plying in a restricted zone, is now under investigation by Swargate police, who suspect the use of a duplicate key.
