26 May
Summary
- A man revealed a 1978 scalding death after 44 years.
- His stepmother was found guilty of manslaughter and cruelty.
- The victim's brother bravely came forward decades later.

A man's courageous decision to reveal a half-century-old secret led to the conviction of his stepmother for manslaughter. In September 2022, he reported that in 1978, his stepmother, Janice Nix, killed his five-year-old sister, Andrea, by scalding her in a hot bath. The death was initially treated as an accident, but the then eight-year-old brother was compelled to lie about the events. He also shared that he and his sister lived in fear of Nix's severe punishments.
Janice Nix, now 67, was found guilty at Isleworth Crown Court of Andrea's manslaughter and of child cruelty towards the brother between 1975 and 1978. Investigators highlighted the significant challenges in proving guilt due to the passage of time and scarce records. Despite Nix's initial claims of ignorance, inconsistencies in her accounts emerged, especially when compared to a coroner's report from the time.
Nix, who had previously written a memoir about her past as a drug dealer and spoken about challenges as an ex-offender, was arrested in February 2025 upon returning to London from Antigua. Jurors heard conflicting testimonies about the tragic events of June 1978. The victim's brother, now 56, described a home filled with fear and abuse, including beatings and forced consumption of cat food, which Nix denied.
Detective Constable Fran Homer praised the brother's bravery, stating his decision was to be a voice for Andrea. The Metropolitan Police emphasized that without his testimony, justice would not have been served. The case aimed to show that victims will be heard, regardless of how much time has elapsed since the offense.
