Christmas Kids: Spot Runaways on the Rails

Commuters across the country are being asked to help identify runaway children this Christmas season. Posters and notices have appeared at train stations nationwide, aiming to increase awareness about vulnerable youngsters travelling alone. This initiative follows recent research revealing that one child runs away from home every five minutes, highlighting a critical issue.

Avanti West Coast is partnering with Railway Children to address this problem, launching a short film titled 'Your Presence Is Presents Enough'. The film encourages passengers to recognize signs of distress in young people who may be fleeing their homes. Specific measures, like 'reserved for runaways' signs on benches at Crewe and Stockport, are designed to capture attention and prompt action.

Travellers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the Railway Children's AT RISK acronym (Attitude, Time of day, Relationship, Instinct, Safety, Keeping a low profile) to better identify children at risk. Adults who notice warning signs are advised to alert station staff or text British Transport Police. This collaborative effort aims to leverage the public's vigilance to ensure more young people are kept safe, especially during the busy holiday period.
