Sandile Buthelezi, the Director-General of South Africa's Department of Health, faces serious charges. He was arrested and appeared in the Pretoria Specialized Commercial Crimes Court alongside two other senior department officials.
The charges include fraud and violations of the Public Finance Management Act. These stem from an irregular payment of over 1 million rand made to a service provider in 2023. The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation confirmed the charges.
The service provider has not been identified, and authorities are seeking its owner for arrest. Director-General Buthelezi and the acting deputy director general and chief financial officer were each granted 10,000 rand bail. Their next court appearance is scheduled for June 3.
