Summary
- Seven workers perished in the Billi Markundi mine collapse.
- Four individuals arrested for gross negligence and safety violations.
- Drilling beyond standards weakened the mine, causing the fatal collapse.

A devastating mine tragedy in Billi Markundi, Sonbhadra, resulted in the deaths of seven workers on November 15. Following a thorough investigation by a Special Investigation Team, four individuals, including the mines manager and mate, were arrested. Their alleged gross negligence and dereliction of duties, such as unsafe drilling practices and disregarding worker safety, directly contributed to the fatal incident.
The SIT's findings indicate that drilling beyond established standards significantly weakened the mine structure. This compromised integrity ultimately led to a massive rock collapse, tragically burying seven laborers. Despite workers expressing concerns, they were reportedly compelled to work under dangerous conditions without adequate precautions or safety briefings.
Authorities have registered a case and are continuing the investigation to ensure the strictest possible action against all culprits involved. The recovery of the bodies took over 65 hours, highlighting the severity of the collapse and the extensive rescue efforts undertaken by multiple agencies.
