Stewart Irwin, aged 56, has been sentenced to six and a half years imprisonment after being convicted of manslaughter. His 74-year-old mother, Veronica Irwin, died in July 2023, after being left on the floor of their shared flat for two weeks. Mr. Irwin called emergency services on July 28, 2023, reporting that his mother had fallen and refused to move or eat.
During the emergency call, Mr. Irwin described his mother as stubborn and stated she had been on the floor for two weeks. He made a disturbing comment, saying, "I could have killed her myself," which he then retracted. Paramedics who responded to the scene initially believed Ms. Irwin had already passed away due to the extreme state of neglect, which included significant pressure sores and an insect infestation.
Despite his claims that his mother did not want help, Irwin's mother was taken to the hospital but died later that evening. The postmortem examination concluded that the cause of her death was hypothermia and neglected pressure ulcers. Detective Constable Emma Armstrong of Cumbria Police highlighted that Veronica Irwin died in "truly horrendous conditions" because her son, who claimed to be her carer, refused to seek timely assistance, despite numerous opportunities.
