Kyle Svara, 27, received a sentence of 76 months in prison for hacking hundreds of women's Snapchat accounts. From May 2020 to February 2021, Svara used phishing texts to obtain security codes from over 1,500 women. He successfully accessed at least 517 accounts, downloading nude or semi-nude photos from 59 women.
Svara's activities included selling and trading the stolen content online. He was also paid by Steve Waithe, a former track-and-field coach at Northeastern University, to hack accounts, including those of student athletes he coached. Waithe was previously sentenced to five years in prison for similar offenses.
Svara pleaded guilty to computer fraud, aggravated identity theft, and making a false statement regarding child pornography found on his accounts. His defense cited isolation during the COVID-19 lockdown as a contributing factor to his actions, expressing remorse for his conduct.
