Teens' Stolen Car Chase Ends in Crash, SIU Closes Case
21 Oct
Summary
- SIU ended investigation due to lack of serious injury.
- Five 16-year-olds charged after a stolen car collision.
- A woman was hospitalized after her vehicle rolled over.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has closed its investigation into a high-speed chase and subsequent collision that occurred on May 22. The incident involved an Ontario Provincial Police officer attempting to stop a suspected stolen Mercedes-Benz near Highway 401 in Cambridge.
The vehicle fled from the officer, evading a spike belt deployed near the OnRoute. It then crossed the median into oncoming traffic, colliding with a Nissan Rogue and causing it to roll over.
One occupant of the Nissan, a 37-year-old woman, was transported to the hospital with injuries. The SIU determined that the woman sustained ligament sprains and a disc protrusion, but no acute traumatic injuries or fractures, thus falling outside their definition of 'serious injury'.
Consequently, the SIU concluded it did not have jurisdiction to investigate the police conduct. The five teenagers from the Mercedes-Benz, all 16 years old, were charged with possession of property obtained by crime. One teen also faces charges related to causing bodily harm and flight from police.
