Sister Jailed for Toxic Neglect Death
4 Sep
Summary
- Sister sentenced to jail for neglect causing sibling's death.
- Victim died from sepsis due to severe bed sores.
- Home conditions described as toxic and unsanitary.

Michelle Neill, 55, received a suspended sentence for the gross negligence manslaughter of her sister, Kelly Neill, who died in October 2022. Kelly, a former stroke nurse, had been paralysed since a stroke in January 2018. Michelle Neill took over her care at their Deptford, south-east London home, but the conditions became "toxic" and "appalling."
Paramedics discovered Kelly on the floor of the living room amid decay and clutter on October 20, 2022, unable to speak. She was hospitalised and died three days later from sepsis, a blood infection linked to severe bed sores. There had been no visits from healthcare professionals for months prior to her death.
During sentencing, the victim's son described his aunt as "pure evil" for her neglect. The judge acknowledged Michelle Neill's genuine remorse and mental health struggles, accepting she was incapable of providing adequate care. Her sentence was suspended due to personal mitigation and a low likelihood of reoffending.
