Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, 63, is in his second day of giving evidence at Newry Crown Court, where he faces 18 charges. These offenses, which include rape, are alleged to have occurred between 1985 and 2008 against two complainants. The trial, which commenced three weeks ago, centers on allegations of abuse dating back decades.
During his testimony, Sir Jeffrey addressed a meeting he had with Complainant B in the late 1990s. He vehemently denied prosecution claims that the meeting was intended to "nip in the bud" the allegations. He asserted he went willingly and was unaware the meeting was specifically about her claims. While Complainant B stated he apologized, Sir Jeffrey clarified it was a general apology for any discomfort he might have caused.
Further challenging the prosecution's narrative, Sir Jeffrey denied taking control of the meeting or immediately acknowledging the allegations. He also stated he was unaware of Complainant B disclosing allegations to others during their teenage years. When questioned about specific comments made regarding Complainant A's physical appearance, he absolutely denied touching her. Sir Jeffrey has consistently maintained that the allegations made by both complainants are untrue. His wife, Lady Eleanor Donaldson, faces separate charges.
Lady Eleanor Donaldson is accused of five counts of aiding and abetting her husband's alleged offenses. She is currently undergoing a trial of the facts due to being previously deemed unfit to participate in a conventional trial on mental health grounds.
