Mississippi DA seeks no bond for suspect

First Circuit District Attorney Jason Herring has filed a motion to hold Javontae Zyderrick Harris, 30, without bond. Harris faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon following a shooting outside a Baldwyn factory last July. Herring argues Harris is a flight risk, noting his escape to Oregon after the incident and subsequent fight against extradition.
The altercation occurred in the parking lot of the FXI factory, where Harris allegedly shot a coworker, Reggie McGaha, in the head. McGaha survived the shooting. Harris fled the scene and was apprehended by federal marshals in Portland, Oregon, but his extradition process took five months.
This incident is not Harris's first brush with violence. In February 2019, he was involved in an argument at a Starkville Waffle House that escalated to him attempting to hit his former girlfriend with his vehicle. He then led police on a pursuit. While charges were initially dropped, he later entered a pretrial intervention program for fleeing, which was dismissed upon completion.
