Mackenzie Shirilla, currently incarcerated at the Ohio Reformatory for Women in Marysville, is serving sentences of 15 years to life following her conviction for murder and vehicular homicide. These charges stem from a July 2022 car crash where her boyfriend and a friend died while she was driving. Shirilla, who was 17 at the time and tried as an adult, is now 21.
Prosecutors contended during her 2023 bench trial that Shirilla intentionally crashed her sedan into a brick wall in Strongsville, Ohio, at nearly 100 mph. This occurred after her relationship with her boyfriend reportedly became strained. However, Shirilla and her family maintain she experienced a medical episode, and the crash was accidental.
Renewed public interest in her case has emerged with the release of the Netflix documentary 'The Crash,' which examines the events leading up to the fatal incident. A former fellow inmate, Kat Crowder, shared her perspective exclusively with PEOPLE, describing Shirilla's prison demeanor as "very happy-go-lucky." Crowder noted Shirilla's consistent use of makeup and frequent laughter, stating it did not reflect remorse.
Crowder, who shared her prison experiences on TikTok, expressed surprise at Shirilla's "nonchalant demeanor." She contrasted Shirilla's "girly and light" appearance in person with the "dark and smug" portrayal in the documentary. The judge presiding over Shirilla's case had described her as "literal hell on wheels."
Shirilla will become eligible for parole in 2037. The Netflix documentary, released on May 15, 2026, features interviews with both Shirilla's family and the victims' loved ones.
