A 29-year-old Scranton man, Austin Van Wert, has been arrested and charged following a three-month period of harassment and threats directed at his ex-girlfriend. The situation escalated when police responded to a report of threats at a Wood Street residence on Saturday afternoon, July 4, 2026. The ex-girlfriend reported receiving disturbing messages after Van Wert's release from prison.
Among the distressing communications were accusations of infidelity and a direct threat stating, "I will kill both of you," sent on July 3, 2026. The victim expressed significant fear for her life and stated she had been unable to sleep since receiving the threat. Van Wert also indicated he would come to her home.
Shortly after police provided the victim with a resource card and advice on obtaining a protection order, she called 911 reporting Van Wert was outside her residence. Officers responded and found Van Wert agitated. During his arrest attempt, he resisted, tensed his body, and refused to comply with officers' commands, leading to a physical altercation.
Van Wert faces charges including terroristic threats, resisting arrest, and harassment. He is currently incarcerated in Lackawanna County Prison on $100,000 bail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 15, 2026, at 10:15 a.m.
