Scooter Owner Fined Over $25,000 Due to Clerical Error

On November 4, 2025, a scooter owner from Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh named Anmol Sangal was issued a traffic fine of a staggering Rs 20.74 lakh (over $25,000) for various violations, including riding without a helmet, license, and vehicle documents. The fine was issued by a sub-inspector at the Gandhi Colony police post under Nai Mandi police station.
The astronomical fine amount sparked outrage on social media. After an internal inquiry, the police admitted that the fine resulted from a "clerical error" - the sub-inspector had incorrectly entered the section number in the fine amount field, inflating the figure to Rs 2,074,000 instead of the correct Rs 4,000 (around $50).
The police have now corrected the fine amount to the proper Rs 4,000, which Sangal's father, Sanjeev Kumar, says they are yet to pay. The seized vehicle has also not been released. Kumar expressed shock at receiving such a large fine for his son's minor violations, stating it was a "clerical mistake" by the police.
