CCTV Reveals Abuse of Autistic Children in School Rooms
31 Jul
Summary
- Autistic children were subjected to abuse in school seclusion rooms.
- Ten families are suing the special school over the alleged mistreatment.
- Police investigation ended two years ago without charges being filed.

Ten families have initiated civil legal action against a special school in north London following the revelation of CCTV footage depicting the abuse of autistic children. The recordings, made between 2014 and 2017, show children being locked in 'calming rooms,' subjected to physical restraint, or left unattended in distressing conditions. These rooms, intended for sensory needs or behavioral support, were allegedly used in a "barbaric" manner, leading to claims of false imprisonment and human rights breaches.
A police investigation into the incidents at Whitefield school concluded two years ago without any charges being filed. However, a recent review commissioned by Waltham Forest council found that restraint and seclusion had become normalized, creating a culture that permitted negative views of non-compliant children. Parents have described these practices as "unimaginable" and "inhumane."
While the Department for Education has introduced a legal duty to record seclusion use, families argue it is insufficient. Documents show one child cried 38 times during a three-hour placement in a seclusion room. The current trust running Whitefield School states that significant learning has occurred and the school is undergoing transformation. The law firm representing the families emphasizes the profound and lasting harm experienced by the children.
