- This marks Australia's first conviction of foreign sextortion scammers.

A global investigation, involving both state and federal police, has culminated in the conviction of two scammers responsible for a sextortion plot. This plot tragically led to the suicide of a high school-aged boy from NSW in 2023.
The Nigerian court sentenced the two men, aged 25 and 29, to a combined total of more than 40 years in jail on Wednesday. This marks a significant international achievement, as it is the first instance of Australia playing a role in securing convictions against sextortion scammers abroad.
The incident unfolded when the boy was contacted by an individual pretending to be a girl online. This person encouraged an exchange of sexualised photos. After the boy sent a photo, the nature of the social media communication rapidly shifted to high-pressure threats and demands, leading to the devastating outcome.
