31 Aug
Summary
- Woman charged with attempted murder and carjacking.
- Defense claims mental health crisis due to schizophrenia.
- Suspect denied bond, awaiting psychological evaluation.

Naziyha Weatherall, of South Carolina, has been charged with attempted murder and carjacking. These charges arose from an incident on April 22, where she allegedly stabbed her Lyft driver 11 times before taking his car. During a bond hearing on Friday, prosecutors described the events as a "frightening factual scenario," emphasizing the extreme danger she poses.
The driver's wife attended the hearing, stating the trauma prevented her husband from being present. She voiced concerns for community safety, noting the violence occurred while her husband was simply providing a service. Weatherall's defense attorney highlighted her lack of prior offenses and argued she was in the midst of a psychiatric emergency, believing she was being trafficked.
Weatherall's mother apologized to the victim's family, pleading for the court to consider her daughter's mental state, stating she is "not a criminal." The defense indicated Weatherall is now medicated, stable, and competent. A judge ordered competency and observation evaluations in June, and on Friday, ordered her continued detention pending a psychological evaluation scheduled for September.
Lyft confirmed that the rider accounts involved have been permanently removed from its platform and that the company is cooperating with law enforcement. A spokesperson stated that such violence is unacceptable and that the company is supporting the driver and his family.
