NYC SantaCon 'Con': Founder Arrested for Fraud
15 Apr
Summary
- Founder arrested for allegedly defrauding $2.7 million from charity.
- Millions raised were used for personal luxuries, not donations.
- Thousands participated annually in the Santa-themed event.

Stefan Pildes, the founder of New York City's SantaCon, was arrested on Wednesday following his indictment on wire fraud charges. Federal authorities allege that Pildes, 50, defrauded the popular holiday charity event of approximately $2.7 million collected from 2019 to 2026.
Authorities claim Pildes diverted over half the funds raised each year to a controlled entity for personal use. This included financing renovations on a New Jersey property, purchasing concert tickets, and funding luxury vacations and vehicles. Despite promoting SantaCon as a charitable event with no producer income, Pildes allegedly used the proceeds to finance his lavish lifestyle.
SantaCon, a ticketed bar crawl attracting over 25,000 attendees dressed in holiday costumes, was organized by Pildes' nonprofit, Participatory Safety Inc. The event solicited donations from participating bars and restaurants, with a percentage of sales intended for the charity. U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton stated that Pildes exploited the public's generosity for personal gain, emphasizing that fraud remains fraud regardless of presentation.
