Crack Market Near Petco Park Busted by Feds

Federal prosecutors have charged 30 suspected members and associates of the West Coast Crips for allegedly operating a large-scale crack cocaine market near San Diego's Petco Park. The indictment, unsealed Wednesday, accuses the gang of transforming a street corner into a busy daytime drug bazaar. This operation is estimated to have distributed around 20 pounds of cocaine base weekly in 2025, with a street value of at least $550,000.

Authorities initiated the investigation in 2024, focusing on alleged West Coast Crips members involved in drug sales and violence. The year-long probe involved extensive surveillance and wiretapped conversations, resulting in the seizure of over 11 pounds of cocaine, $14,000 in cash, and two handguns. The market was also a site of violent incidents, including a shooting that injured at least two people.

A significant sweep on Wednesday morning involved over 350 law enforcement officers executing search warrants and arresting 28 of the 30 defendants. Many charged individuals have prior felony convictions, including drug sales and violent offenses. The US Attorney stated San Diego is not a 'gangster's paradise.'

All 30 defendants face charges of conspiracy to distribute cocaine and cocaine base. Convictions carry a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in federal prison, with potential life sentences and substantial fines. The operation, alleged to have been led by Rynell Baker, a convicted murderer, highlights ongoing efforts to combat organized drug crime in San Diego.
