Recent Rutgers University graduates Malaika Chitre, 24, and Navam Kaul, 24, tragically lost their lives after being struck by a subway train in Manhattan. The incident took place early Sunday morning around 3:15 a.m. at the Spring Street station. Haunting footage widely shared on social media showed the two friends sitting on the subway tracks before the No. 4 train approached.
Law enforcement sources indicated that one individual may have gone onto the tracks, with the other following to assist. The train operator reportedly observed Chitre laughing and pulling Kaul closer just before impact. The investigation is considering several possibilities, including extreme intoxication rendering the victims unaware of the approaching train, or suicide, although no suicide notes have been discovered.
Chitre was a quality operations specialist at Acadia Pharmaceuticals and was studying to become a doctor of pharmacy. Kaul worked as a financial data analyst at Bloomberg, having ended his contract role in May. Both had graduated from Rutgers in 2024 and grew up in neighboring suburban towns in Central Jersey with a strong South Asian community connection.
Concerns about the increasing number of subway-related fatalities have been highlighted, with 241 people struck by trains in 2023, resulting in 97 deaths. As of the report, officials have not released the number of fatalities for the current year.
