Seven ancient Ashtadhatu idols, estimated to be worth Rs 68 crore on the international market, have been joyfully restored to the Ram Janaki Mutt in Buxar. These precious artifacts, dating back 300 years to their installation by the Maharaja of Nepal, were stolen from the mutt nearly three years ago, on January 21, 2023.
Police swiftly recovered the idols the following morning from a car near Ara-Chhapra Mor, arresting one suspect. The idols were released from police custody on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, following the completion of a Rs 6 lakh bail bond process. After a journey back to Barka Dhakaich in Buxar district for sacred rituals, they were finally returned to their home.
This incident echoes a previous theft in 2011 from the same mutt, which resulted in the murder of the priest and the subsequent recovery of three idols in 2013. The return of these invaluable idols marks a significant moment for the temple and its devotees, restoring a lost piece of history and spiritual heritage.
