Rosebuds, a nonprofit dedicated to bringing book clubs and creative writing workshops to incarcerated women, is set for a major expansion. Co-founders Nora Fried and Julia Fox announced plans to open six new locations across New York by the upcoming new year.
Founded by Nora Fried in February 2025 as a personal passion project, Rosebuds began at Rikers Island. Julia Fox joined as co-founder in January 2026, bringing significant energy and dedication to the initiative. The program has evolved into a vital safe space, serving between 20 to 30 women.
Rosebuds' expansion will include juvenile detention centers such as Crossroads and Close to Home, as well as Bedford Hills Correction Facility. They are also partnering with the Brooklyn Children's Museum for a reunification program and providing books for visits at Rikers.
Fried expressed a vision for Rosebuds to become as widespread as Planned Parenthood, with aspirations for a national, even international, presence. The organization recently hosted its first carnival fundraiser at Elizabeth Street Garden on October 8, 2026, to support its infrastructure and programming.
