Filmmaker Rhea Kapoor, sister of Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor, is embroiled in a jewelry theft case involving diamond-studded earrings valued at Rs 1.35 crore. These earrings reportedly vanished from her makeup artist's handbag during a recent trip to New York for a high-profile fashion event. Mumbai's Sahar Police Station has initiated a formal investigation following the registration of a case against an unidentified individual.
The expensive jewelry had been rented from two Mumbai-based jewelers, Mehta Jewellers and Goenka Jewellers, specifically for the Met Gala event. The team, including makeup artist Savleen Singh, traveled on April 27, 2026, and arrived in New York on April 28, 2026. Upon checking into The Pierre Hotel, the makeup artist discovered both jewelry boxes in her handbag were empty.
The missing items comprise emerald-stone diamond gold earrings from Mehta Jewellers, valued at Rs 66 lakh, and Zambian emerald-stone gold-bordered earrings from Goenka Jewellers, worth Rs 69 lakh. Following their return to Mumbai, a complaint was filed, leading to the FIR under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Investigators are meticulously reviewing the entire travel timeline to ascertain where the theft occurred, from the airport to the flight and the hotel in New York.
