A retired 58-year-old Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) from the Mumbai Police has been booked for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol. The incident occurred on Saturday evening in Navi Mumbai's Karave area when his car collided with a tempo. Fortunately, no one was injured in the collision.
Navi Mumbai's NRI Coastal police confirmed that the accused, Arun Pokharkar, was found to be driving drunk based on a medical test. He was booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Motor Vehicles Act for rash and negligent driving. Pokharkar was not arrested but received a notice under the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita.
Viral videos showed angry bystanders confronting and assaulting the retired officer, who was found with his old police identity card and an illegal police nameplate displayed in his private vehicle. Police stated that misusing police insignia is a violation of the Motor Vehicles Act. This incident follows a similar case last August where a police constable was booked for drunk driving and injuring a biker.
