A rescue dog named Rio, once intensely fearful, is now playing a crucial role in combating organized crime. Originally showing extreme timidity, Rio was rehomed multiple times before arriving at Woodside Animal Welfare Sanctuary. Her potential was recognized by a retired police dog trainer who began her specialized training in 2020.
Rio now works with the National Crime Agency-led Operation Machinize, assisting in investigations into businesses suspected of money laundering, illegal tobacco and vape sales, drug trafficking, and modern slavery. Her handler noted her incredible transformation, highlighting her high confidence and focus during operations.
Deployments have seen Rio achieve significant successes. In Cornwall, she helped uncover large quantities of illegal goods and a hidden stockroom. During separate operations in Plymouth, she was instrumental in detecting 35,000 illegal cigarettes, 1,000 more cigarettes, and discarded Class A drugs. Even attempts by criminals to mask scents with garlic proved futile against her abilities.
The breed, Belgian Malinois, is noted for its demanding nature, requiring constant mental stimulation, making them unsuitable for many households. Rio's success story demonstrates an exceptional outcome for a dog whose breed needs are often underestimated, leading to many being rehomed.
