Summary

- Searches have resumed for the mother and son who vanished in 1976.

The notorious MacRae murder mystery, Scotland's longest-unsolved case, may soon offer closure. Renee MacRae and her three-year-old son, Andrew, disappeared in November 1976, vanishing without a trace. Nearly five decades later, police believe they are close to locating their remains.
William MacDowell, Renee's lover and Andrew's father, was convicted in 2022 for their "premeditated executions." This conviction was remarkable as it occurred without the discovery of any bodies, a rarity in Scottish criminal history.
Over the past 50 years, extensive and labor-intensive searches have been conducted in the Highlands. These efforts included quarry excavations and the removal of thousands of trees, all in pursuit of finding Renee and Andrew.
MacDowell lured Renee and Andrew to a remote layby with promises of a new life, but instead murdered them. Their car was found burnt out, with a bloodstain matching Renee's blood type discovered in the boot. Suspicion fell on MacDowell due to his affair with Renee and his attempts to conceal evidence, such as replacing his Volvo's boot floor.
Despite MacDowell's wife initially providing him with an alibi, it was later disproven. MacDowell was arrested and charged in 2019, with his trial concluding in 2022. He was sentenced to 30 years but died just five months later, taking the secret of their final moments to his grave. However, new searches may finally reveal their resting place.
