Reddit Tip Leads to Brown Shooter Capture

Authorities have identified Claudio Neves Valente, a 48-year-old Portuguese national, as the suspect in a shooting incident at Brown University that resulted in two fatalities and nine injuries. Valente died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on December 19, 2025, as law enforcement closed in on his location at a storage facility in Salem. This marked the conclusion of a six-day manhunt that began after the initial shooting in Providence, Rhode Island.

Valente had taken extensive measures to evade capture, including altering license plates and changing vehicles. However, an anonymous tip posted on Reddit proved instrumental in breaking the case. The tipster, who later identified himself as John, provided specific details about a grey Nissan sedan with Florida plates seen in the vicinity of the Rhode Island Historical Society.

This crucial information allowed investigators to review surveillance footage more effectively, identifying a vehicle matching the description. John also provided a detailed account of his encounters with Valente, including observations about his clothing and demeanor, which ultimately helped confirm Valente's identity and led to his apprehension.
