12 Sep
Summary
- Vigil held for Rebecca Mathieson, who died last month after assault.
- Family seeks more transparency and active involvement from police.
- Fifth homicide incident of 2026 under active investigation by RPS.

Candles were lit on Thursday evening for the vigil of Rebecca Autumn Mathieson (Wilson), who died on August 30th after being seriously injured in an assault. Her younger sister, Katie, fondly remembered Rebecca as a unique light with a strong spirit and sense of humor.
Rebecca, described as a devoted Christian, enjoyed long walks with family and Bible study. Katie highlighted the resilience Rebecca displayed throughout her life, particularly as an Indigenous woman who sometimes faced disbelief.
The Regina Police Service announced on September 3rd that Mathieson, 37, had died from injuries sustained during an assault on August 14th. The investigation into the aggravated assault has been reclassified as a homicide, marking the fifth such incident in 2026.
Her family is seeking more transparency from the police service and desires justice for Rebecca and other Indigenous women. The RPS major crimes unit is actively working to determine the circumstances surrounding her death, and the public is asked to come forward with any information. A GoFundMe has been established to fund an independent investigation.
