Victim's powerful response to online trolls
24 Jan
Summary
- Rape victim refutes online criticism of her appearance.
- She asserts lifestyle choices don't invalidate trauma.
- Tom Silvagni, son of AFL great, is appealing conviction.

A 23-year-old rape victim has issued a strong public statement following online criticism of her credibility, which was based on her appearance and social media presence. Tom Silvagni, son of Carlton great Stephen Silvagni, was found guilty of two counts of rape in December and sentenced to over six years in prison, though he is currently appealing the conviction.
The victim addressed online commentary suggesting her social media activity indicated she was not a victim. She responded defiantly on Instagram Stories, stating that "After going through hell, best believe I am going to rock up to Pilates in a cute matching set." She further emphasized that what a survivor posts online does not negate their trauma or imply the assault never happened.
She also refuted claims that clothing choices or lifestyle decisions undermine her experience. "What someone chooses to wear is not giving consent (even if it's 'revealing')," she wrote. The offenses occurred in January 2024 at the Silvagni family home. Evidence presented at trial indicated Silvagni digitally raped the complainant after falsely telling her their mutual acquaintance had left.
