Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has ordered an investigation into the death of an 18-year-old patient at Raj Hospital in Ranchi. The deceased, Raju Kumar Ranjan, was admitted on May 24 for a leg injury sustained in a road accident and passed away on July 1.
His family accuses the hospital of medical negligence, claiming a lack of regular wound care led to a severe infection and his subsequent death. They also allege an exorbitant billing of Rs 22 lakh, which escalated into protests outside the hospital.
Raj Hospital's Managing Director stated the patient had multiple injuries and recommended amputation, which the family allegedly did not consent to. He also contested the Rs 22 lakh bill, stating the outstanding amount was around Rs 2.4 lakh after insurance, and denied any negligence.
The Deputy Commissioner of Ranchi has initiated a three-member team to examine hospital records, treatment protocols, and the family's allegations, with a report expected from the Civil Surgeon.
