21 Oct
Summary
- Actor Rajpal Yadav faces a cheque dispute over Rs 5 crore financing.
- Supreme Court appointed Justice Najmi Waziri as sole mediator.
- Yadav's conviction challenge for dishonoured cheques is ongoing.
The Supreme Court has appointed former Delhi High Court judge Justice Najmi Waziri as the sole mediator in a cheque-dishonour dispute involving actor Rajpal Yadav. This action aims to facilitate an amicable resolution to a financial disagreement that originated from a 2010 agreement.
Under this agreement, Yadav received Rs 5 crore to finance his directorial debut, 'Ata Pata Laapata.' The dispute centers on seven cheques, each for Rs 1.05 crore, issued in 2013 as part of a settlement that allegedly bounced. Yadav had previously agreed to repay approximately Rs 11 crore, including interest.
During recent proceedings, the Supreme Court acknowledged Yadav's deposit of Rs 2 crore with its registry. The court expressed optimism that mediation could amicably resolve the complex issues. Consequently, Justice Waziri was appointed to mediate the dispute.
The Supreme Court also directed the trial court to release Yadav's passport, enabling him to continue his professional work, provided he meets specified conditions. He may travel abroad only after adhering to these stipulations and must inform the trial court upon his return.
This mediation occurs while Yadav's plea challenging his conviction and three-month sentence in seven cheque-dishonour cases is still pending. The Delhi High Court had previously upheld his conviction and imposed the sentence, refusing to condone a significant delay in filing appeals. The High Court had ordered Yadav to pay over Rs 1 crore in each case, with adjustments for a Rs 2 crore payment already made.
