Two girls in Rajasthan's Bundi district, both studying in Class 12, have successfully halted their impending child marriages. The girls, aged 17 and 16, approached authorities on February 7 and February 3 respectively, seeking assistance to stop their weddings scheduled for February 10. Their proactive steps led to immediate intervention from the local Deputy Superintendent of Police and the Child Welfare Committee (CWC).
Authorities responded by summoning the girls' parents, informing them about the legal consequences of child marriage, and issuing prohibitory orders. The 17-year-old was placed in a government shelter home, while the 16-year-old, whose parents attempted to advance her wedding date, was taken into protective custody. Both students are now safe and their education will be prioritized, with the CWC arranging for their examination centers.
Bundi district has seen over half a dozen such prohibitory orders issued, highlighting a local commitment to combating child marriage. The CWC has urged public cooperation in eradicating the practice, emphasizing the importance of education, law, and children's rights. Citizens are encouraged to report any instances of child marriage to Childline at 1098 or local authorities.
