Rajasthan HC Orders Urgent Medical Upgrades at Jodhpur Court
14 Aug
Summary
- Court mandates immediate deployment of medical staff to Jodhpur Sessions Court Complex.
- Failure to provide adequate medical care violates fundamental rights under Article 21.
- A lawyer's death highlighted severe deficiencies in emergency medical services.

The Rajasthan High Court has mandated the immediate strengthening of medical facilities at the Jodhpur Sessions Court Complex. This directive comes in response to a petition highlighting severe inadequacies in healthcare services at the bustling court, which serves approximately 1,500-2,000 lawyers and over 3,000 litigants and their families daily. The court stressed that the right to health and access to basic medical care is a fundamental right guaranteed by Article 21 of the Constitution. It was noted that the existing Janta Clinic has minimal staff against a sanctioned strength of nine personnel, leading to critical shortages of doctors and nurses.
The court's order, issued on Thursday by Justice Anoop Dhand, requires the deployment of one medical officer, two Grade-II nursing staff, one pharmacist, one laboratory technician, two ward boys, and one sweeper. An ambulance must also be stationed at the complex. The need for these improvements was underscored by the tragic death of a lawyer from a heart attack, reportedly due to the absence of immediate medical assistance and essential emergency equipment like CPR. The court recognized lawyers, litigants, and court staff as vital pillars of the judicial system, necessitating adequate medical support and infrastructure.
