31 Aug
Summary
- Over 1700 tickets issued in two months for e-scooter violations.
- New laws ban riders under 16 and require learner permits.
- Nearly 400 non-compliant e-scooters and e-bikes were seized.

Queensland police have enforced new e-scooter and e-bike regulations, issuing more than 1700 tickets and seizing almost 400 devices in the past two months. The crackdown, initiated in early July, targets non-compliant devices exceeding power limits or lacking pedal assistance, and riders breaching age or licensing requirements.
These new laws, a first in Australia, prohibit riders under 16, with parents facing penalties for their children's infringements. Adults without a driver's license will need a learner permit, unless medically exempt. Individuals with suspended or disqualified licenses are also banned from using these devices.
The stricter measures follow a fatal e-scooter crash involving a 13-year-old boy in Childers, who was reportedly not wearing a helmet. Transport Minister Brent Mickelberg stated the legislation aims to prevent such tragedies and establish a framework for safe e-mobility use. The laws stem from a parliamentary inquiry prompted by a rise in hospitalizations and deaths linked to the growing popularity of e-mobility devices.
